How to become a Hotel Front Desk Clerk

Also called: Hotel receptionist, Ryokan front desk clerk

Works at the front desk of a hotel or ryokan (traditional Japanese inn), handling check-in, room allocation, messages, sightseeing information and payment.

How to become one

No particular education or qualification is required to start. New graduates can come from any field of study, but some join after graduating from a senmon gakko (vocational college) or university with a course in hotel, tourism or restaurant management. After joining, staff receive training and build experience on the job. Some people are hired as hotel staff and work as porters or room attendants before moving to the front desk. At large hotels, people hired as future managers may gain experience in several departments before being posted to a core department. Related qualifications include the 'hotel management skills' certificate under the ginou kentei (national trade skills test) set by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, and private qualifications such as the service and hospitality test. Language qualifications are also useful. This job puts you on the front line with guests, so a bright smile, polite language, good manners and omotenashi (wholehearted Japanese hospitality) are important. You deal with other departments a lot, so you need to communicate clearly without misunderstandings. The work is mostly done standing, so a certain level of fitness is needed. With more foreign visitors in recent years, enough conversational skill in a foreign language to serve guests politely is also increasingly expected. As well as building experience on the job, studying on your own is important.
