How to become an Internal Medicine Physician
Also called: Doctor
Diagnoses illnesses of the internal organs, nerves, blood and so on, and treats them with medicines, diet and other methods.

- Taking a patient's history, examining them by listening and touch and ordering tests as needed
- Diagnosing illnesses from examinations and test results as a whole
- Choosing treatments and medicines
- Explaining the diagnosis and treatment to the patient
- Instructing nurses to carry out medical procedures
- Writing prescriptions and explaining to patients how to take medicines safely
- Recording each consultation in the medical record and preparing documents such as medical certificates
- Giving advice on preventing illness
- Giving advice after health check-ups
- Explaining the patient's condition to the family
- Guiding junior doctors and students
- Giving guidance on patient safety in the hospital
- Helping to run the hospital
- Attending case review meetings and training to improve medical skills

How to become one
To work as an internal medicine physician you must pass the National Medical Licensing Examination and obtain a medical licence. First you study at a university medical school for six years, gaining specialist knowledge and doing practical training at the same time. Once you pass the university's graduation exams you can sit the national exam, and passing it gives you a medical licence. You then complete at least two years of clinical training as a junior doctor at a teaching hospital such as a university hospital or large hospital, learning while treating real patients. After this training you join an internal medicine department and become a physician. There is a system for being certified as a specialist if you meet the set requirements. After clinical training, physicians work as hospital doctors and build up a lot of experience. Some become head of department at their hospital, and some set up their own practice. Some continue research at a university medical school and become lecturers or professors. The job is to protect people's lives and help them stay healthy, so the responsibility is heavy. You need to communicate well with all kinds of patients, from children to older people, and ease their symptoms in both body and mind. You also need the mental strength and patience to handle long hours of treatment, such as caring for emergency patients.
