How to become one
To work as an obstetrician and gynaecologist you must pass the National Medical Licensing Examination and obtain a medical licence. First you study at a university medical school for six years, gaining specialist knowledge and doing practical training at the same time. Once you pass the university's graduation exams you can sit the national exam, and passing it gives you a medical licence. You then complete at least two years of clinical training at a teaching hospital such as a university hospital or large hospital, rotating through many other departments and learning while treating real patients. After this training you join an obstetrics and gynaecology department and become an obstetrician and gynaecologist. There is a system for being certified as a specialist if you meet the set requirements. After clinical training, these doctors work in hospitals and build up a lot of experience. Some become head of department at their hospital, and some set up their own practice. Some continue research at a university and become lecturers or professors. This job means being there at the start of life, so it takes broad knowledge, plenty of experience and compassion to help women give birth with peace of mind. You also need the mental strength and fitness to handle births in the middle of the night and emergency operations, and good communication with pregnant women, midwives and nurses.
