How to become an IT Help Desk Technician
Also called: In-house support desk, In-house help desk
Answers users' questions and problems with systems and IT equipment by phone, email or in person.
Main tasks
- Discussing solutions to issues and problems from the previous day
- Answering questions by phone and email
- Entering details into the database
- Sorting problems by type (first-level triage)
- Escalating issues (passing them to specialist staff)
- Researching questions online and in the knowledge database, and checking with the equipment maker if the cause lies with them
- Replying to questions and problems (by phone or email), sometimes on site
- Answering problems and questions by phone or email
- Managing incident response and giving the necessary instructions
- Connecting remotely to users' PCs or POS terminals to fix faults
- Setting up PCs and installing software
- Testing new products and new versions

How to become one
