How to become a Medical Office Clerk
Also called: Health insurance claims clerk, Dental billing clerk, Hospital receptionist, Ward clerk, Health information clerk, Medical billing clerk
Prepares the documents for claiming medical fees in hospitals and clinics, and at the front counter handles outpatient reception, billing and admission and discharge procedures.
Main tasks
- Taking new patients' health insurance cards and preparing their records and patient cards
- Helping patients, explaining tests and making appointments
- Entering treatment details from medical records into the computer and preparing billing claims
- Checking billing claims for errors
- Taking payment for medical fees at the counter
- Managing medical records and other documents
- Answering the phone
- Using office equipment such as photocopiers, fax machines and computers
- Dealing with rejected billing claims
- Checking documents and claiming costs for examinations and screenings subsidised by local government
- Claiming compulsory car insurance payments from insurers

The work involves repeatedly copying information onto documents and calculating points, so you need the persistence to work steadily without losing concentration, and the attention to notice oversights and mistakes.
