How to become one
No particular qualifications or level of education are needed to start, but you need broad knowledge across many fields, the thinking skills to report and comment, and the writing skills to produce articles, so almost all reporters are university graduates. New graduates sit a newspaper's exam after graduating and are hired as reporters. Mid-career hires include people who have built experience at specialist papers and similar publications. After joining, new reporters train at head office and are then assigned to a department. At national newspapers, many are first posted to a regional bureau, where they gain experience covering all kinds of stories. Depending on ability, reporters can become "caps", who lead reporting teams in the field, after eight to ten years. After about five to six years as a cap, some become desk editors who guide reporters on reporting and writing. After working on the desk, some are promoted to head of a department or to managing editor, the person in charge of editing the paper. With experience, some become freelance reporters or university teachers. You need curiosity about everything, a willingness to experience and think through things that interest you, and the drive to pursue them.
