How to become a Professional Sports Organisation Staff Member
Official title: Professional Sports Organisation Staff
Also called: Sports promoter
Works for the organisation that runs a professional baseball, football, basketball, volleyball or other sports team, promoting ticket sales, raising the team's profile and running the fan club.
How to become one
No particular education or qualifications are needed, but there is little hiring of new graduates, and mid-career hires who can contribute straight away are sought. At present most are university or senmon gakko (vocational college) graduates. The work is very varied: experience of talent management, for example, can be an advantage for running a fan club, and data mining skills are valued for market analysis. You can find vacancies on team websites and job sites. After hiring there may be general training from HR, but training for the work itself is mostly within the team and then on the job. After joining you belong to the team that hired you, and later there are chances of promotion to team leader, senior team leader (department head), division head, director and so on. Moving to other departments is often possible if you want it. Useful knowledge and skills include using collaboration tools on a computer (information sharing, document management, scheduling, video meetings, chat and so on), and ticketing, membership and email systems. No qualification is essential, but a standard driving licence is sometimes required for carrying equipment to events. Experience in business or corporate planning, management consulting or sports business is an advantage. You need an interest in team sports, but playing experience is not required. As well as loving sport, you need communication skills because you negotiate with many people in the job. You also need the ability to understand and analyse the current situation using digital skills, and to plan ideas and carry them through.
