It is said to take 5 to 7 years to become fully skilled at saw sharpening and setting, and 3 to 5 years for other work, but off-bearing (taking sawn timber away from the saw) is fairly easy even for beginners. Related qualifications include the machine woodworking technician grade of the ginou kentei (national trade skills test) set by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, and qualifications certified by the Japan Wood Technology Association such as timber drying specialist, timber bonding specialist and timber cutting specialist. Timber production involves standing all day and much machine work, so a fair amount of physical strength, quick movements and care to work safely are needed. Timber production is often done in teams of 2 or 3 at each stage, so cooperation is also needed. Sawmill machines are also tending to become more complex as devices are added for automation, so if you work with machines it is good to be interested in mechanics, electricity, and hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
