How to become a Sewing Machinist
Also called: Shirt machinist, Menswear machinist, Garment sewing worker, Knitwear machinist, Womenswear and childrenswear machinist, Curtain machinist, Quilting machinist, Machine embroiderer
Uses sewing machines to sew fabric and other materials together to make clothes and other products.
Main tasks
- Cutting fabric to match the paper pattern
- Gathering and preparing the outer fabric, lining, interfacing and other trimmings cut into many pieces from the pattern
- Sewing collars, sleeves and pockets
- Sewing the pieces together on a machine in the right order
- Ironing in creases to make the work easier
- Applying starch to make the work easier
- Overlocking cut edges to stop them fraying
- Sewing buttonholes and attaching buttons
- Doing bar tacking to stop fraying, decorative stitching and embroidery
- Putting elastic into waists, cuffs and similar places
- Sewing on loops
- Finishing sewn products neatly with a press or iron
- Removing loose threads after sewing
- Inspecting products and sorting good from faulty
- Altering ready-made clothes to fit customers
- Mending frays and tears
- Measuring customers and making clothes to fit
- Making and sewing fabric goods such as pencil cases, pouches and bags
- Adding decoration by hand sewing
- Estimating the cost of sewing and materials

How to become one
No particular education or qualification is required to start. After joining, you usually learn the skills on the job through practical training. Sewing involves many steps of different difficulty, so some can be learned in a few months while others need several years of experience. Learning every step takes 3 to 5 years of experience, varying a little by type of garment. You usually start with fairly simple machine work such as straight seams and darts and take on harder steps as you gain experience. Once you have learned every step and become highly skilled, you guide and supervise a team. Related qualifications include the menswear manufacturing, womenswear and childrenswear manufacturing, and fabric sewing technician grades of the ginou kentei (national trade skills test) set by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, which are valued as proof of skill. You need an interest in sewing, good hand skills, and a good sense of fashion and shape. Work is mainly done as a team, so cooperation is also needed.
