How to become one
No particular education is required to start. To drive a shuttle bus for a facility or school, you need a standard car licence or a heavy vehicle licence depending on the size of the bus. To drive shuttle buses for a bus company, you need a class 2 heavy vehicle licence (for carrying paying passengers). If a shopping centre or hotel runs its own shuttle bus as part of its service rather than contracting a bus company, a standard or heavy vehicle licence is enough. This applies when the facility uses a minibus, minivan or van treated as a private vehicle. When a bus company runs its own vehicles as shuttle buses, a class 2 heavy vehicle licence is needed. Many bus companies help staff obtain the class 2 heavy vehicle licence and actively hire people with no bus driving experience. In that case you often need to meet the licence requirement of having held a standard licence for at least three years. Some shuttle drivers for welfare facilities also hold care qualifications. Some shuttle bus drivers at bus companies have moved from truck driving, and quite a few change jobs after reaching retirement age. At a bus company, you receive in-house classroom and on-the-job training during a trainee period on the flow of work, routes, road conditions, driving points to watch and customer service. After training, a supervisor usually rides along with you for three days. Above all, this job demands safe driving, and more operators are taking steps to prevent accidents, such as having drivers take an annual driver aptitude assessment, including tests of dynamic vision, at NASVA (National Agency for Automotive Safety and Victims' Aid). At bus companies, there are paths to becoming a driver trainer with experience or gaining the operations manager qualification and taking on a supervisory post. Some drivers move to shuttle buses from route buses or charter buses. Passengers may feel unwell or sudden accidents and other problems may happen during a run, so you need the skills to put passengers' safety first, the ability to communicate smoothly with passengers and a spirit of hospitality.
