How to become a Stage Lighting Technician

Handles lighting for plays and concerts in theatres and halls and on stages at event venues.

How to become one

No particular education or qualification is required to start, but working with electricity needs specialist knowledge, so many people have studied electrical, electronic or lighting subjects at university or a senmon gakko (vocational college). Some also have knowledge or experience of the performing arts. After joining, you build your lighting skills as a stage-side lighting operator, lighting people and sets, or on follow spot, keeping a spotlight on performers. With experience, you become a chief operator, directing other operators from the lighting control room. From chief operator you may become a lighting planner, preparing lighting plots and cue sheets. Some also become lighting designers. A related qualification is the stage and television lighting technician certification run by the Japan Association of Lighting Engineers and Designers. Lighting is team work with many staff, including directors, and you may need to be able to read scripts and musical scores. You may also need wide knowledge of the whole theatre, including stage structure and all stage equipment, including sound systems, not just lighting, as well as artistic sensitivity.
