How to become a Biologist, Botanist, Zoologist or Related Professional
Official title: Biologists, Botanists, Zoologists and Related Professionals
Studies living organisms and how they interact with each other and with their environment.
Main tasks
- Carry out laboratory and field research in the life sciences, and develop new products, processes and techniques to solve problems in medicine, agriculture, the environment and industry
- Collect specimens and data from humans, animals, insects and plants, and study their origin, development, chemical and physical state, structure, composition, life and reproduction
- Examine or track organisms using specialist equipment, instruments and methods, such as electron microscopes, remote sensing, GPS, biotechnology, satellite imagery, genetic engineering, digital image analysis, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and computer models
- Identify, classify, record and monitor the activity of organisms, and maintain databases
- Assess the effects of natural and human factors on living environments, and advise on the conservation and management of natural resources
