How to become a Fire Protection Equipment Technician
Also called: Fire Service Technician
Installs, tests and maintains fire protection equipment and systems such as extinguishers, hoses, reels, hydrants, fire blankets, exit lighting, fire and smoke doors, gaseous fire suppression systems, passive fire and smoke containment systems, and foam generating equipment.
Main tasks
- Installs fire protection equipment and systems in accordance with industry standards
- Inspects and tests fire protection equipment and systems to ensure they are working properly
- Maintains and services fire protection equipment and systems to ensure they comply with regulations and meet performance standards
- Identifies, reports and repairs any faults or issues with fire protection equipment and systems
- Advises building owners about new fire protection equipment and systems
Ways in
- Apprenticeship: Certificate III in Fire Protection. Trade occupations are usually entered through an apprenticeship: paid work plus this qualification, typically 3 to 4 years.
