How to become a Jeweller
Makes and repairs jewellery such as rings, brooches, chains and bracelets, crafts objects out of precious metals, or cuts, shapes and polishes rough gemstones to produce fashion or industrial jewels.
Main tasks
- Creates jewellery pieces using various materials, tools and techniques
- Repairs damaged jewellery by soldering, polishing and replacing missing parts
- Shapes and polishes rough gemstones to enhance their appearance
- Inspects and evaluates gemstones and precious metal for quality and authenticity
- May appraise the quality and value of jewellery items
Ways in
- Apprenticeship: Certificate III in Jewellery Manufacture. Trade occupations are usually entered through an apprenticeship: paid work plus this qualification, typically 3 to 4 years.
