How to become a Construction Materials Tester
Official Chinese title (2022 occupational classification): 建设工程质量检测员
Tests the quality of new, extended and renovated buildings and municipal infrastructure, including building materials, components and the completed structure and how it performs.
Main tasks
- Reading test plans, setting test procedures and getting equipment and tools ready
- Testing the bearing capacity of foundations and composite foundations, the locking force of rock bolts, how much load piles can take and whether pile shafts are sound, with ultrasonic testers, bolt pull out testers and low strain integrity testers
- Testing concrete, mortar and masonry strength, rebar cover depth, the structural performance of precast components and the load performance of post installed anchors on site, with rebar locators, rebound hammers, ultrasonic testers and pull out testers
- Testing curtain walls for air and water leaks, wind load deformation and interstorey movement, and the compatibility of structural sealants, with curtain wall test rigs and compatibility test chambers
- Testing steel structure welds, anticorrosion and fireproof coatings, joints, fasteners, high strength bolts and space frame deformation with ultrasonic flaw detectors, torque testers and universal testing machines
- Sampling and testing incoming cement, rebar, sand and gravel, concrete, steel strand, asphalt and other materials and components under witness, and doing basic soil tests, with mixers, testing machines, climate chambers, permeability testers and soil limit testers
- Analysing test data and issuing test reports
