Operates special equipment to turn barley into malt by cleaning, steeping, germinating and drying.
Main tasks
- Cleaning and grading barley with vibrating screens, graders, cyclones and destoners
- Moving barley into, storing it in and taking it out of silos with conveying equipment
- Operating steeping control systems to wash and steep barley
- Spreading barley and controlling germination with scrapers, turners and germination boxes
- Sending green malt to kilns and roasters to dry and cure it
- Controlling and adjusting additives and processing aids used in malting
- Operating equipment to unload dried malt, remove rootlets and polish it, and store or pack it
- Setting and adjusting roasting equipment to make specialty malts
