Checks in passengers at the airport (counter work) and guides them onto their flights (gate work).
Main tasks
- Checking the date, flight number, name and other details on passengers' tickets
- Checking passport expiry dates and visas
- Assigning seats to suit passengers' wishes and managing them on the computer
- Issuing boarding passes using the check-in system
- Checking in large luggage and issuing baggage tags
- Making bookings and arranging schedules for passengers at the request of ticket sellers and booking agents
- Checking passengers' tickets and passes and showing them to the boarding area
- Using a microphone to guide passengers from the gate to the aircraft door
- Changing bookings
- Guiding and looking after people who need extra care, such as people with disability, people who are ill and VIPs
- Checking seat arrangements in advance for children and their families and people with disability
- Finding passengers who are late for boarding
- Dealing with customer complaints and problems
- Giving explanations, information and arrangements when flights are delayed or cancelled
- Dealing with lost or damaged luggage
- Taking orders for in-flight meals
- Running the lounge reception and managing its facilities
- Helping load and unload luggage and cargo

You need to learn about aviation law, such as items banned from aircraft and restricted areas in the airport for security, the conditions of carriage such as tickets and fares, international air transport rules, and immigration, customs and quarantine. You need a sense of responsibility to get flights away on time, and the judgement and ability to act flexibly to meet customers' many requests. As this is a service job, communication skills and a friendly manner are also essential.
