How to become a Railway Operations Controller
Also called: Rolling Stock Clerk, Signals and Communications Controller, Train Dispatcher, Railway Operations Clerk, Railway Timetable Planner, Railway Traffic Controller
Plans train operations and draws up train timetables based on social and economic trends and the railway company's business strategy.
Main tasks
- Drawing up efficient, economical timetables that take account of track conditions, distances between stations, stopping times and connections with other trains
- Understanding passengers' needs and travel patterns to make timetables easier to use
- Monitoring and managing whether trains are running to the timetable
- Checking that maintenance of track, signals and power equipment is done on time
- Switching points and setting signals by remote control at the centralised traffic control centre
- Gathering information on delays and expected recovery and revising the operating plan in emergencies
- Instructing drivers, conductors and station staff to get delayed services back to normal, and informing passengers
- Managing crew health and working arrangements
- Drawing up staffing plans and crew training plans
- Guiding and training other staff
- Making the necessary applications to government bodies
