How to become one
No particular qualifications or level of education are needed to start. Taxi company dispatch centres with radio stations must have qualified radio operators to operate the equipment, so a land radio operator qualification (Third-Class Special Land Radio Operator or higher) is an advantage. Having studied electrical or telecommunications subjects at high school, or having equal or better knowledge, also helps. Companies hire through Hello Work (the public employment service) and job advertisements as office staff, but some fill the role by moving their own taxi drivers or office staff, or by hiring mid-career. For people without the qualification or job knowledge, some companies provide training after hiring and send them on courses to gain the radio operator qualification. Answering calls, using the terminals and learning the local area are taught after joining, often through on-the-job training by experienced staff. You need polite, clear speech on the phone, and dispatch instructions must be accurate and quick. By the nature of the job you also need to know the area well, and to respond quickly and properly in emergencies.
