How to become an Art Director
Leads the visual design when creating advertisements and similar work.
Main tasks
- Meeting clients to find out the purpose, budget, scale and other requirements of the advertisement
- Creating the design concept for the advertisement
- Choosing staff such as copywriters, designers, illustrators and photographers
- Drawing up strategies and plans
- Preparing cost estimates
- Presenting advertising ideas to clients
- Talking with the copy, design and production staff and coordinating the whole project
- Attending photo shoots and giving the necessary directions
- Choosing artwork
- Deciding the basic layout and working out where text and photos go
- Checking printing proofs
- Completing the print layout by adding to it and cutting and pasting
- Writing instructions on margins, type sizes and so on for typesetting and printing
- Making samples and prototypes
- Managing work schedules and deadlines
- Finishing the final advertisement and getting the client's approval
- Sending the finished advertisement to the publisher or printer
- Working with event companies and PR firms
