How to become a Bag Maker
Also called: Bag manufacturing worker, Bag machinist, Leather goods maker, Leather goods machinist
Makes bags, handbags, wallets, card holders and similar goods from natural leather, synthetic leather, fabric and other materials.
Main tasks
- Planning and designing new products
- Making prototypes and changing the specifications if needed
- Making a paper pattern for each part from design drawings and specifications
- Dyeing, painting, embossing and otherwise working leather and other materials
- Cutting leather, fabric and other materials along the pattern with a press, knives or scissors to make parts
- Skiving (thinning) leather to make it easier to sew
- Backing fabric, fur, knit and similar materials with non-woven fabric
- Sewing parts, linings and zips together with industrial sewing machines or by hand to assemble products
- Making holes and sewing to attach decorative fittings
- Measuring items with callipers, tape measures and rulers, following instructions and specifications
- Sorting good products from faulty ones
- Finishing products by cleaning dirt off the surface and polishing them to a shine
- Packing and delivering products
- Finding broken parts on bags and replacing them using tools
- Mending tears in bags by hand or machine sewing or patching
- Buying and managing materials

How to become one
No particular education or qualification is required to start. After joining, you usually start with work that does not need skill and learn about materials and methods through one-to-one guidance from supervisors and senior workers. It is said to take about 2 to 3 years to become fully skilled at sewing fabric and about 5 to 7 years for leather. Once you are fully skilled at sewing, you can set up your own business. Hard work, care and good finger skills are needed. If you design products, you also need an eye for beauty, including colour and pattern, and the spatial ability to picture the real item from a design or sketch.
