How to become a Jewellery Maker

Makes beautiful jewellery from gold, platinum and other materials, set with gemstones such as diamonds and rubies.
Main tasks
- Coming up with jewellery designs
- Choosing gemstones and precious metals to suit the design
- Cutting and polishing rough gemstones with special grinders and cutters
- Transferring the design onto gold, silver, platinum or other alloys and cutting it out with a fretsaw
- Hammering, bending and cutting precious metals with chisels and other tools to shape them in 3D
- Joining shaped metal parts by soldering
- Stamping patterns into or engraving precious metals
- Making the original model of a piece
- Making wax models for precious metal pieces
- Heating and melting precious metals and pouring them into moulds to shape them (casting)
- Polishing the surface of precious metals to clean them
- Setting gemstones into metal mounts
- Washing and drying pearls, polishing them to a shine in a cloth-lined wooden frame, and finding the centre of each pearl to drill a hole
- Sorting pearls, choosing the centre pearl and threading pearls of the same colour onto silk thread from largest to smallest
- Attaching chains and clasps to make necklaces
- Making accessories by joining beads and similar items with wire
- Polishing and resizing rings and other items
- Repairing customers' jewellery
- Delivering products and selling them through online shops and other channels

How to become one
No particular education or qualification is required to start. Many new graduates come from senmon gakko (vocational colleges) in design or metal engraving. Some people move from other jobs. A related qualification is the precious metal jewellery making technician grade of the ginou kentei (national trade skills test) set by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, which is valued as proof of skill. It is said that at least 3 years of training, learning from senior workers, is needed to develop your eye, gain the skills and knowledge and become fully skilled. People who are interested in making things, have good hand skills and work carefully (as the work is detailed), and have an eye for beauty and creative ability are needed.
