How to become a Biomass Power Plant Design Engineer
Also called: Building design engineer, Structural design engineer, Building services design engineer
Designs biomass power plants.
How to become one
Few companies build only biomass power plants; most build many kinds of plant. So new graduates are usually hired by plant construction companies as career-track technical staff, and some eventually become biomass power experts. Most are postgraduate, university or kosen (college of technology) graduates in science and engineering fields such as mechanical, chemical, electrical, energy or environmental engineering. Some have studied electronics or IT, to make plant operation more efficient and automated. Mid-career hires are usually engineers from power companies, construction companies or equipment makers, taken on for their technical skills. No licence or qualification is essential, but many people gain the national energy manager qualification of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry after joining. Other related qualifications include Professional Engineer (mechanical, sanitary engineering or environmental fields) and pollution control manager. As well as the science and engineering foundations mentioned above, you need cooperation, communication skills, coordination skills and integrity, because these are huge facilities built by many people working together. Design is also specialised, so persistence and patience are needed.
