How to become a Seismic Assessment Engineer
Assesses how well buildings, shops, homes and similar can withstand earthquakes and proposes strengthening or renovation plans where needed.
How to become one
There is no essential qualification for seismic assessment work, but the usual path is to study architecture at a university engineering faculty or similar, gain the kenchikushi (registered architect) qualification, then join an architectural firm, construction company, house builder or local builder and learn seismic assessment methods and techniques. Others graduate from a technical high school, join an architectural firm or similar, gain the architect qualification while working and learn how to carry out seismic assessments. Either way, you are not given seismic assessments straight away after starting; usually you gain practical experience at the firm and learn on-site survey methods and work by taking part in the assessments the firm takes on. Few people join the construction industry aiming for seismic assessment from the start; more often they come to see its importance through practical experience on site, or start studying because their work requires it. A nationally approved course in seismic assessment is the seismic assessment qualification course registered with the Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (run by the Japan Building Disaster Prevention Association), with courses for each building structure type. To take it you must be a first-class or second-class architect, or a wooden structure architect for timber building assessment. Local governments and others also run courses for seismic assessment engineers. When owners of timber houses and similar apply to their local government for grants for seismic strengthening work, a condition of the grant is that the assessment is carried out by a qualified engineer who has taken these courses. For seismic assessment work, it is important to have specialist knowledge of and interest in the strength and earthquake resistance of buildings. To make accurate assessments, you must collect figures that truly reflect the current condition through thorough on-site surveys. So you need the persistence and sense of responsibility to survey every necessary point accurately and carefully. There is a lot of work at height and outdoors, so a certain level of agility and fitness is needed. You work inside clients' homes, so you also need communication skills to listen to clients' wishes, check anything unclear and explain the situation properly.
