Designs book covers and jackets using their own taste and expressive skill, in line with the author's intentions.

How to become one

No particular education or qualification is required to start, but the usual route is to learn design basics and skills at an art university or design senmon gakko (vocational college), then join the studio of a working book designer and learn the skills and knowledge needed for book design as an assistant. Some people teach themselves and enter the industry. After gaining knowledge as an assistant, you are gradually trusted with all aspects of book design. Some become book designers after working as editors, publishing staff or graphic designers. After learning the full range of skills, some go independent as freelancers. You need visual expression skills (design), taste, and a broad background in areas such as literature. Because you work on making books, knowledge of typefaces (fonts) and paper (materials) is essential. Design is now mostly done on computers, so computer skills are needed too.
