Also called: Merchandise display worker, Shop window dresser

Designs displays in shops and similar places to promote sales and create atmosphere.

How to become one

No particular education or qualification is required to start. People who join display companies as display designers have often studied the basics and more at a senmon gakko (vocational college) or university with related courses, such as display design, spatial design or visual merchandising (VMD). Not many people move from other jobs, but some department store sales staff learn merchandise display skills and become display designers. After joining, you spend several years working as an assistant designer before being trusted with work as a fully skilled display designer. After that, some continue as specialist designers and become VMD directors, while others leave design work to help run design companies. A related qualification is the merchandise display technician grade of the ginou kentei (national trade skills test) set by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare. You need basic design and expressive skills and an eye for fashion and trends. You need to express up-to-date images based on a theme, present the message you want to get across, and make people connect with it. Because the aim is to promote sales, you also need wide knowledge, such as marketing (analysing the lifestyles of target customers and the market) and products and fashion.
