How to become one
No particular qualifications or level of education are needed to start, but you need a standard car driving licence. Some new graduates can attend a driving school after joining the company to get their licence. After joining, staff learn the company's rental services and the basics of the job (customer service, checking vehicles, cleaning the branch and cars). Some companies run training at each level, starting with new-staff training and continuing with training for mid-career staff and branch managers. Holding qualifications such as a large vehicle driving licence, automotive mechanic or non-life insurance agent widens the work you can do, so some companies help staff get them. Because the job is mainly customer service, you need good manners of speech, a courteous attitude and a neat appearance, and a real wish to help. Teamwork is also important, as the branch runs as a team. With experience, staff also take on sales to grow revenue and coach other staff. Depending on results and ability, some are promoted to branch manager, then area manager and general manager. Depending on their aptitude and wishes, some move into car-rental-related departments such as vehicle maintenance or sales.
