How to become a Video Rental Shop Assistant

Handles the rental and return of DVDs, Blu-rays and music CDs of films and dramas at a video rental shop, and also looks after stock and customer records.
Main tasks
- Buying in and stocking rental items to match customer demand
- Preparing newly arrived CDs, DVDs and Blu-rays so they can be rented
- Checking ID and signing up rental members
- Entering member details into a database
- Renting out CDs, DVDs and Blu-rays to customers
- Working out rental fees from the rental period and taking payment from customers
- Processing returns of CDs, DVDs and Blu-rays
- Checking returned CDs, DVDs and Blu-rays for scratches and dirt
- Cleaning CDs, DVDs and Blu-rays and their cases
- Putting returned items back in their proper place
- Selling books, batteries, CDs, DVDs, Blu-rays, headphones and other goods
- Offering customers a warranty service when selling games consoles

How to become one

With more experience, some are put in charge of running a whole shop as manager, and at companies with many shops some become area supervisors who coach the managers and staff in their region.
