How to become a Fine Ceramics Engineer
Also called: Fine ceramics product development engineer, Fine ceramics manufacturing engineer
Develops fine ceramics products and manages their production processes and quality.
Main tasks
- Developing products with excellent heat resistance, durability and insulation
- Developing new fine ceramic products and new uses for them
- Researching and developing products using new raw materials
- Improving machining methods such as cutting and polishing, and developing new forming methods
- Carrying out experiments and trials to work out raw material mixes and firing conditions
- Assessing properties of fine ceramics such as conductivity, thermal conductivity and hardness
- Assessing the performance of fine ceramic parts and devices
- Looking at production equipment
- Helping to draw up production plans
- Asking for competing quotes for raw materials and production equipment
- Writing guidelines on choosing raw materials and on production processes
- Managing production processes and giving technical guidance and supervision
- Guiding cost reduction, energy saving and environmental measures on the production floor
- Managing intellectual property to protect production technology
Workers in this job say university or high school is common. From job tag's survey of people in each job, who could give several answers. It shows what workers see as common, not how many workers hold each level.
How to become one
No particular qualification is required to start. All-round engineers, covering materials development, product design and process control, have often studied chemistry (including applied chemistry), inorganic materials, physics (including engineering physics and applied physics), mechanical engineering or electrical and electronic engineering at university or postgraduate level. Some production process engineers are graduates of high schools or kosen (colleges of technology). After joining, you are guided and developed through on-the-job training. In development and design, people often stay in the same department while development themes change, so they can deepen their specialism. If you are placed on the production floor, you often rotate through the stages to find what suits you before being given your duties, and then you are promoted to team leader, supervisor, section manager and other management roles. To make high-performance fine ceramic parts and devices, you must have knowledge of the many-stage production technology (materials development, part design, raw material preparation, forming, firing, machining and property testing), based on specialist knowledge of chemistry, physics, mechanical engineering and electrical and electronic engineering. In development and design, overseas work is increasing, so English conversation, the ability to read English documents and knowledge of patents are needed. In production too, there are many chances for technical partnerships and technical guidance overseas, and English becomes more important as you are promoted to manager. CAD systems are used in design, so CAD skills are also needed.
