How to become a Fireworks Maker

Makes and launches the large, beautiful fireworks shown at fireworks festivals and other events.

How to become one

No particular education or qualification is required to start, but most fireworks businesses are small and medium-sized family firms passed down through generations, and many hire through personal connections. Some people work repeatedly as temporary staff hired during the peak fireworks festival season each year and are hired permanently once their ability is recognised. After joining, you start with support work such as carrying and fixing fireworks shells and launch tubes, gain experience and learn launching skills, and must take a safety course to obtain a fireworks display safety handbook. Once you master making and launching fireworks, you gradually take on more responsible work such as safety management and staff management. Fireworks cannot be stored or made unless someone holds the explosives handling safety manager and explosives manufacturing safety manager qualifications. In practice, you can work in a fireworks factory, gain experience in daily work, learn the relevant laws and knowledge, and sit these exams, and many workers hold these qualifications. Making fireworks involves handling explosives, which are hazardous, so responsibility and care are needed. The work also often involves heavy physical labour, such as carrying materials, preparing at festival sites and clearing up afterwards, so a fair amount of physical strength is needed.
