How to become one
No particular education or qualification is required to start. Many new high school graduates come from technical high schools. After joining, you receive basic training in oil refining processes for about six months to a year. You are then placed in a workplace, gain several years of experience on site and, once you are used to the work steps and running the equipment, control the refining process as a board operator. Some go on to gain the hazardous materials manager or high-pressure gas production safety manager qualifications and become team leaders. Job changes and internal transfers are rare, but some move to planning or engineering departments, such as refinery planning or equipment inspection, using their experience of running refinery equipment. You handle hazardous materials that could lead to major disasters, so you need to understand complex chemical reactions and processes and act carefully and calmly. Working hours are irregular and include night shifts, so a fair amount of physical strength is needed. People who are interested in chemistry and machines, follow rules closely and are responsible are needed.
