How to become one
No particular education or qualification is required to start. It helps to study agriculture at upper secondary school or a senmon gakko (vocational college), or to learn about soil preparation, plant biology, data-based environmental control and farm management through training and seminars. You drive tractors to plough and trucks to carry produce, so a standard car licence and a large special vehicle licence are also needed. Greenhouse growing involves boilers, so boiler technician and hazardous materials handler qualifications are useful too. There is a lot of repetitive work with machines and by hand, so a fair level of fitness is needed, along with patience and persistence. The job suits people who are interested in and keen on growing living things and who like working in nature. To improve the quality of your vegetables, it is important to keep learning, for example by gathering information on new growing techniques and plant breeding. Gathering information to understand consumer needs accurately is also important for deciding what to grow and when. If you run your own farm, you also need business skills.
