Runs auctions of fresh food and other goods at a wholesale market so that trading between wholesalers, intermediate wholesalers and other buyers is fair and efficient.

How to become one

No particular education or qualifications are needed to start. To become an auctioneer, you must be hired as an employee of a wholesale company at a wholesale market, be placed in sales, gain selling experience, and pass a registration exam. The exam is run by each market's managing body (such as a local council or administrative association). Those who pass receive a registration certificate, which is valid only at the market that issued it. Auctioneers need a set amount of market experience and knowledge of the law and trading. You also need the judgement to read the prices offered by many bidders in an instant and decide the buyer, and a fair, neutral and honest attitude.
