How to become one

People usually join a securities company and sit the sales representative qualification exam run by the Japan Securities Dealers Association. Most people in the job are university graduates. There are two securities sales representative qualifications: Class 1 (allowing you to handle all securities) and Class 2 (which does not cover certain products). Once qualified, you can do securities work after being registered as a sales representative with the Japan Securities Dealers Association. You can sit the Class 1 exam without holding Class 2. Securities companies also often run their own training to develop staff. Some people go independent as financial advisers (IFAs), giving investment advice from a neutral position. You explain constantly changing markets such as share prices to customers, so you need specialist knowledge of the world economy, finance and individual companies' results, finances and growth prospects, and the ability to analyse information. You handle large sums of customers' money, so you need a sense of responsibility and a character that earns customers' trust.
