How to become a Medical Device Development Engineer
Also called: LCD design engineer, Circuit design engineer, Electronic equipment design engineer, Electric motor design engineer, Industrial robot design engineer, Precision measuring tool design engineer, Semiconductor equipment design engineer
Researches, develops and designs medical devices used in hospitals and clinics, working for a medical device manufacturer.
Main tasks
- Developing product concepts based on customers' requests and other input
- Setting out the broad plan for development, taking into account the product outline and costs
- Drawing designs with CAD software and similar, following the concept design
- Checking strength and other properties using CAE and other analysis tools
- Making prototypes and testing them widely, including how they work, how safe they are and how easy they are to use
- Producing detailed design drawings covering everything down to materials, processing and assembly
- Finishing a design that can be mass-produced, balancing performance and cost by sharing and reducing parts and cutting assembly time
- Keeping strict control of development records and design changes
- Reviewing and improving designs while working with doctors and other clinicians
- Writing patent applications
- Preparing applications for approval to sell medical devices
- Attending medical conferences and presenting research
- Attending medical conferences and demonstrating the company's medical devices to doctors and others

How to become one
