Health care assistants help and support disabled, ill, injured and elderly people with basic health care.

- Help patients dress, wash and eat
- Clean and restock medical wards
- Do laundry, cleaning and shopping
- Take patients to appointments
- Report patient concerns or accidents
- Assist with administrative tasks
- Follow health and safety procedures
- Provide emotional support to patients
How to become one
You usually need experience to become a health care assistant and a qualification may be useful. You usually don't need specific NCEA levels for this job, but Level 2 may be useful. Other requirements: experience in similar work; an entry certificate in health care assistance; to do entry training in community client care; a driver licence.
