How to become a Medical and Pathology Laboratory Technician
Official title: Medical and Pathology Laboratory Technicians
Carries out medical laboratory testing and writes reports on the results to help doctors make a diagnosis.
Main tasks
- Test blood, body fluids, excretions and secretions for viruses, bacteria and parasites, and carry out biochemical, serological, microbiological and microscopic tests
- Operate, calibrate and maintain laboratory instruments such as spectrometers, calorimeters and computerised analysers
- Analyse the chemical make-up and reactions of biological samples
- Evaluate specimen analysis processes, techniques and test methods, and set standard procedures

- Technical college: Technical and vocational college programme. Universities of science and technology and junior colleges run departments in related fields: medical technology and laboratory science (0914). Departments in academic year 114 (2025-26): four-year technical bachelor's (四技) 8, two-year technical bachelor's (二技) 9, five-year junior college (五專) 11, two-year junior college (二專) 4. Fields matched to the occupation by Peernovo.
- Licence (national exam): Regulated profession. To practise as a medical technologist you must pass the national Professional and Technical Examination (專門職業及技術人員考試) for 醫事檢驗師 and hold the certificate. Listed in the annex to article 2 of the Enforcement Rules of the Professional and Technical Examinations Act, item 14.
