Also called: Shunting Leader, Coupler, Retarder Maintenance Worker, Shunting Instructor, Hump Yard Duty Officer, Hump Yard Operator
Breaks up, makes up, attaches, detaches, collects and delivers trains of wagons at stations.
Main tasks
- Receiving and passing on shunting plans and deciding how to do the work
- Recognising and giving shunting signals
- Checking track and points and throwing points
- Checking wagons and loading positions, attaching and detaching wagons and coupling air hoses and couplers
- Watching speed and spacing and using skates, hand brakes and so on to adjust speed and the gaps between wagon groups
- Taking emergency action when problems arise
