How to become an Aircraft Engine Engineer
Also called: Aircraft engine development engineer
Researches and develops jet engines for aircraft.
Main tasks
- Discussing the concept design of the engines that will be needed in future
- Setting the specifications in the preliminary design (thrust, fuel use, fan diameter, weight and so on)
- Discussing which parts to improve and how, when improving existing engines
- Drawing 2D cross-sections of the engine based on the set specifications
- Setting information at engine-system level, module interfaces, and temperature and pressure conditions
- Doing detailed design and breaking it down into subsystem design, such as the fan module, and part design, such as the combustor module
- Working through part designs with colleagues in terms of surface checks, strength, aerodynamic design and vibration
- Making 3D models of sub-modules in CAD and checking for problems
- Calculating strength and checking for problems
- Running flight simulations and analysing the data
- Choosing subcontractors to make parts
- Writing specifications and drawings for parts made by outside firms
- Discussing parts with outside contractors
- Testing the performance of contracted parts
- Running engineering tests once everything is complete to check performance, including durability, meets the specifications
- Recording the development process and preparing documents
- Running tests to gain approval
- Preparing documents to gain approval from overseas authorities
- Preparing documents to gain approval from the regulator (the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism)
- Writing maintenance manuals and documents
- Setting up the mass-production process and managing assembly
- Managing production schedules and quality
- Finding the cause when faults occur
- Developing special process technologies
- Developing surface treatment technologies that improve engine performance
Workers in this job say university or a master's degree is common. From job tag's survey of people in each job, who could give several answers. It shows what workers see as common, not how many workers hold each level.
How to become one
Most entrants have a university degree or a master's degree. As well as basic engineering knowledge, you need knowledge and theory of machines if you specialise in mechanical engineering, or of fluids if you specialise in fluid dynamics. No licence or qualification is needed to get a job. As well as regular graduate hiring, there are chances to join jet engine makers mid-career, in which case many come from industries related to jet engines, such as industrial gas turbines. Some people move on using their experience of airframe or jet engine development, and some move to airlines. Most aircraft makers are foreign companies, led by those in the United States, so almost all documents are in English. There is a lot of joint work with engineers from other countries, and in that case you communicate in English. It generally takes from several years to nearly 10 years after joining to become a fully skilled engineer, depending on your area. Engineers specialise in a wide range of fields, including drafting, structural analysis, aerodynamic analysis, combustion, vibration and impact analysis, control, materials, production engineering, engine assembly, testing and inspection. Jet engines cannot be developed by one person: you work with engineers from each specialist field, so communication skills and cooperation are needed. When you lead a team or project, coordination skills and leadership are needed.

- Vocational college, junior college, kosen and trade skills tests: College of technology (高等専門学校, kosen). 13% of workers surveyed by job tag say college of technology graduates are common in this job. In March 2025, 421 kosen graduates started work in manufacturing engineering (development) (School Basic Survey 2025, table 109).
