How to become one

Most people are graduates of university science and engineering faculties, and a high share have a master's degree or higher. Common subjects include applied chemistry, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, civil engineering, architectural engineering, electrical and electronic engineering, systems engineering, control engineering and information science. After joining, you are guided and developed through on-the-job training while you work. After 2 to 3 years, once you understand your own specialist area reasonably well, you may rotate to other departments to learn the technologies around your specialism and broaden your skills. After 6 to 7 years, you may take on a role guiding design engineers in your area. There are many related qualifications, such as professional engineer (construction, mechanical, chemical, environmental, sanitary engineering, water supply and sewerage, and more), first-class architect, certified energy manager, high-pressure gas production safety manager, chief gas engineer, pollution control manager, construction management engineer (plumbing, building, civil engineering, electrical work and more), chief electrical engineer and information technology engineer. Plant design and construction need a wide range of skills, so many people gain these as needed after joining to widen the work they can do. Recently some people also gain the US PE (Professional Engineer) licence, which is widely recognised internationally. As well as specialist knowledge, you need communication skills to pass information smoothly, because design is shared out and done in cooperation across fields. Overseas work has grown in recent years, so English is increasingly needed. Design also uses many analysis tools and design systems such as simulators and CAD, so expertise in these is needed too.
