How to become a Precision Equipment Engineer
Researches, develops and designs machines that must be highly accurate, such as precision measuring instruments, optical equipment and medical devices, and develops and manages their manufacturing processes.
Main tasks
- Setting a product concept based on requests from in-house planners and customers
- Making a rough design that takes the product outline and costs into account
- Drawing designs with CAD software
- Checking strength and other properties with analysis tools (CAE)
- Making prototypes and checking a wide range of design points, such as how they work, safety, ease of use and appearance
- Making prototype models from 3D data (3D printing)
- Producing design drawings that describe everything in detail, down to material processing and assembly
- Looking at sharing or reducing parts and simplifying assembly steps when designing production processes
- Designing production processes that balance performance and cost and allow mass production
- Working out machining and manufacturing techniques that balance performance and cost and allow mass production
- Designing assembly equipment and testing equipment for production
- Meeting suppliers to discuss drawings when buying parts
- Investigating the cause of problems in production and taking action
- Designing products developed for customers

How to become one
No particular education or qualification is required to start, but because the job needs specialist knowledge, most new graduates come from kosen (colleges of technology), universities or postgraduate programmes, often having studied electrical, electronic, mechanical or optical engineering. Mid-career hires often move within the same industry. After joining, you start on the path to becoming an engineer with in-house training. As a career path, if you are placed in new product development, for example, you first do design support such as correcting drawings, reworking parts and updating technical documents, then become a designer, working with sales, design and manufacturing staff and bringing in the latest technology as you repeat the design process and build the experience you need. Later you may become a team leader or manager. Precision equipment engineers carry out detailed checks with precision measuring instruments that can detect errors of one hundred-thousandth of a millimetre, so concentration and patience to stay focused are needed. A positive attitude to taking up the latest technology is also important. You often work in teams of specialists from different fields, so you need communication skills to get your meaning across clearly even on matters outside your own specialism.
