How to become one

No particular education or qualification is required to start, but new graduates need wide knowledge, including the four core mechanics subjects (strength of materials, machine dynamics, fluid mechanics and thermodynamics) as well as mechatronics and control engineering, so almost all are graduates of kosen (colleges of technology), universities or postgraduate programmes. After joining, there is often training matched to years of service and skill level. Some companies give training specific to the machines being designed. For promotion and career growth, after a junior period of drawing designs and making some proposals, you become a team leader. Leaders check the function of drawings and prototypes and advise on how to deal with problems in products. Next you may become a manager responsible for running the workplace, such as placing staff and planning and managing budgets, and later a general manager in charge of product strategy, development plans and coordinating work. As well as moving into management, you can become a mechanical design specialist using your knowledge and skills. It generally takes about 5 to 10 years after joining to be recognised as fully skilled. No particular qualification or licence is required, but understanding the systems and laws directly linked to the work is important. Laws such as the Household Goods Quality Labelling Act, the Electrical Appliances and Materials Safety Act, the Radio Act and laws on hazardous substances are seen as especially important. When exporting to overseas customers, machines must be designed with rules such as WEEE and RoHS in mind. Mechanical design is becoming more specialised by field, so the work is based on teamwork with several developers and sales staff. As well as the knowledge and skills needed for mechanical design, you need the understanding and communication skills to grasp what customers want and develop and design customised products. Language skills for dealing with overseas customers and partners are often needed.
