Makes and serves coffee and other drinks and light meals in a cafe, works the till and cleans.
Main tasks
- Showing customers the menu
- Suggesting set menus and recommended items to customers
- Taking orders and payment at the counter
- Operating coffee machines and blenders to make the drinks ordered
- Preparing light meals and snacks, or taking them from storage and plating them
- Putting orders together and handing them over at the counter or taking them to tables
- Packing orders in takeaway containers and handing them to customers
- Selling coffee beans by weight
- Selling coffee equipment and other coffee products
- Wiping counters, tables and chairs and cleaning the cafe
- Collecting rubbish
- Collecting and washing used cups and plates
- Restocking and tidying milk, sugar, napkins and similar
- Operating the air conditioning to keep the cafe at a comfortable temperature
- Checking stock and ordering items that are running low
- Preparing ingredients
- Calculating and managing sales and costs
- Writing a daily report after closing
- Teaching new staff and correcting staff mistakes
- Hiring part-time and casual staff to keep enough people on
- Drawing up staff rosters
- Making and putting up point-of-sale signs
- Putting up posters and similar in the cafe for advertising

How to become one
No particular education or qualifications are needed to start. The work is done standing, so a certain level of fitness is needed, and you need to serve customers in a way that suits the cafe's atmosphere. You also need to handle food hygiene and money. As a career path for permanent staff, you join a company that runs cafes and become a manager after working in several cafes. After that you may become a supervisor at a franchise chain's head office, advising each cafe on how to run its business, or a senior employee of the company. Cafe chains have two kinds of outlet: company-run outlets operated directly by the cafe company, and franchise outlets run by owners who have signed a franchise agreement. At franchise outlets the owner is sometimes also the manager.
