How to become a Supermarket Assistant
Also called: Grocery store assistant, Supermarket salesperson
Arranges food, clothing, household goods and other products in a supermarket so they are easy to shop for, restocks shelves, helps customers and sells goods.
Main tasks
- Deciding how much stock to bring in and placing orders
- Checking that deliveries match the orders
- Preparing delivered goods so they can go on display
- Putting goods out on the shop floor and storing the rest in the stockroom
- Putting on price tags and arranging displays so products stand out
- Tidying goods that customers have handled and keeping displays neat
- Restocking items that are running low on the shop floor
- Using point-of-sale signs to promote sales
- Marking down goods near their best-before or use-by dates and goods that are not selling
- Directing customers around the store and explaining where products are and what types there are
- Cleaning the shop floor
- Throwing out goods past their best-before date
- Analysing sales of each product and preparing reports to guide future buying and displays
- Drawing up sales plans
- Managing rosters and working hours for staff and casual workers
- Sharing information with head office
- Passing on work instructions from head office

How to become one
No particular education or qualifications are needed to start. Work manuals are provided, so you learn the job by following them and taking advice from supervisors and senior staff. However, preparing fresh food takes skill and experience as well as following the manual. New graduates are usually hired through their school, job magazines or job websites, and people changing careers mostly through Hello Work (public employment service) and job advertisements. Many staff are part-timers or students working casually, and the store manager hires them. Some part-time staff are made permanent employees, depending on their length of service, hours and attitude, and given more responsible work. After gaining experience serving customers in different departments and handling cash, some people are promoted to store manager or move into buying.
