How to become a Supermarket Cashier
Also called: Cashier, Checkout operator, Till operator
Works at the checkout of a supermarket or similar store, totalling customers' purchases and handing over goods and change.
Main tasks
- Getting ready for opening, for example putting out stock, checking the change float and cleaning around the till
- Learning the day's special offers and their prices to avoid charging mistakes
- Operating the till and scanner to total purchases
- Taking payment in cash, vouchers or by card and giving change and receipts
- Gift-wrapping goods
- Answering customers' questions and directing them around the store and to products
- Handling customer complaints and returns
- Handing out product samples to customers
- Watching the flow at the tills, topping up and collecting change and tidying shopping baskets
- Setting up and managing self-checkout machines
- Calling for help when the tills are busy
- Helping other departments when they are short of staff
- Restocking supplies such as disposable chopsticks, straws, spoons and plastic bags
- Totalling sales at the end of the day and sorting and counting the notes and coins in the till
- Totalling and recording till errors and returns
- Preparing and filing records of customer numbers and sales

No particular education or qualifications are needed to start. Work manuals are provided, so you learn the job by following them and taking advice from supervisors and senior staff. New graduates usually find jobs through their school. After starting, you are taught how to use the till, handle money and goods and deal with customers, using manuals and learning on the job from trainers and senior staff. Even part-timers usually have a training period of three to four days. With experience, some people are promoted to chief or trainer. Operating the till needs accuracy and speed, so concentration is needed. Customers' impressions depend a great deal on how the cashier treats them, so you are expected to move goods through efficiently, look neat and tidy and deal with people briskly.
