No particular education or qualifications are needed to start, but there are many kinds of flowers and potted plants, so you need to learn how to care for and handle them, building on basic botany. New shops and large shops mainly hire through Hello Work (public employment service), job advertisements and school referrals, and also use job magazines, flower arranging magazines and trade newspapers. They are not required, but holding qualifications such as an ikebana (Japanese flower arranging) licence, a flower arrangement certificate or the floral decoration exam in the ginou kentei (national trade skills test) run by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare may count in your favour when you apply. It is important to study for such qualifications after you start. You also need an interest in and specialist knowledge of flowers and plants, a pleasant manner with customers and a sense of colour and design. A certain level of fitness is needed too, for deliveries and buying. As your skills and abilities grow, you can open your own shop.
