How to become one
No particular education or qualifications are needed to start. After joining a retailer or company, you are placed in sales, administration or technical work depending on your aptitude and wishes. Large chains hire regularly through schools and Hello Work (public employment service). Small and medium retailers often hire through newspaper advertisements and job flyers when they need staff. After starting, you learn selling, customer service and repair skills from senior staff. However, repair and service involve electrical work such as installation and fitting, which requires the electrician (denki koji shi) qualification. Holding it means you are treated as a technician, which helps with pay. To advise customers you need to know each manufacturer's product features and about electricity. Polite service and the ability to persuade customers to buy are also needed. Products are becoming more varied and customers more knowledgeable and specific in what they want, so you need to be able to answer their questions accurately when selling or repairing. You may be promoted to chief or store manager, and at large chains with a head office, store managers are sometimes transferred to head office. Related qualifications include retail sales specialist, home appliance engineer and home appliance adviser.
