How to become one
No particular qualifications or level of education are needed to start, but people usually get a job after graduating from a senmon gakko (vocational college) or similar with a grooming course. Several organisations issue grooming qualifications, and most groomers gain one of them. At vocational colleges and similar schools, students learn not only trimming, grooming and cutting but also many other things, such as dog breeds, anatomy, public health and disinfection methods. Dog cuts follow fashions too, so as well as basic cutting methods you need to keep up with trends. Grooming and trimming dogs for dog shows requires further study and a lot of practice. The job suits people who like dogs and want to know a lot about them. You need communication skills to build trust with owners, and reasonable fitness because you are on your feet for most of the work.
