How to become a Wedding Planner
Also called: Wedding Coordinator, Bridal Adviser (Wedding Venue), Bridal Planner
Advises customers who are planning a wedding, plans and proposes the ceremony and reception, and prepares cost estimates.
Main tasks
- Finding out the dates and kind of wedding and reception customers want
- Checking venue availability and making bookings
- Meeting customers repeatedly to decide each detail of the wedding and reception in turn
- Preparing a quote based on the agreed wedding and reception plan
- Presenting the quote, explaining the contract and signing it with the customer
- Booking and ordering everything that has been agreed
- Meeting the MC, photographer, lighting and music staff in advance
- Decorating the venue and setting up the reception desk and tables on the wedding day
- Helping and guiding the couple as they enter and leave and when they cut the wedding cake
- Showing guests where to go
- Running the sound, lighting and special touches during the wedding and reception
- Directing the food and drink service while keeping an eye on the programme and timing
- Staying with the bride from the ceremony until the end of the reception
- Planning and running events to attract new customers and venue visitors
- Showing customers around the venue
- Writing magazine and website articles and social media posts
- Asking customers for reviews after the wedding
- Making posters

No particular qualifications or level of education are needed to start. There are private bridal training schools that run short courses for people changing careers and for ordinary university students. Because weddings are a relatively expensive purchase, many companies put a lot into training staff after hiring them. Customers pay a large sum for a once-in-a-lifetime celebration, so you need to be kind, pleasant and cheerful with them. You need knowledge of weddings, thoughtful communication that understands what customers are saying, and the creative planning and presentation skills to meet ever more sophisticated and varied needs. You also need good communication within the company so complaints and problems can be handled quickly, and a mindset ready to manage the unexpected. You can also build your skills by gaining the national trade skills test (ginou kentei) in bridal coordination.
