How to become one
No particular education or qualifications are needed to start. Large stores mostly hire regularly through schools, while small and medium shops mostly hire through job advertisements or personal connections. At large stores, after hiring you may be placed in sales, administration, the warehouse or the distribution centre depending on your aptitude and wishes. A related qualification is retail sales specialist, which some employers encourage because it helps you understand retailing as a whole. You need an interest in sport itself, the ability to explain things so customers are satisfied, a brisk manner, and a wish to help customers improve their game. It is important to pick up quickly on fast-changing fashions and consumer trends and to have broad, deep knowledge of sport in general. If you are put in charge of products for a sport you have not played, it is important to make an effort to understand it. With experience you may be promoted to chief or store manager. If you work at a small shop you might consider going independent, but this takes plenty of experience and an eye for economic trends.
